UFS PRE-RELEASE & GREAT LAKES CHAPIONSHIP
AT WONDERWORLD COMICS
(WEEKEND OF THE 18-19 NOVEMBER 2006)
It was the best of times… it was the worst of times. Scratch that, it was an all-around great time for UFS players at Wonderworld Comics in Taylor, Michigan.
UFS players had been eagerly anticipating the day when two more popular fighting videogames would be plucked from their respective systems, and made into powerful CCG cards that captured the audience of both fighting game fanatics, and card game players alike. At noon the games began, and what a turnout! Twenty-seven players were registered and ready to roll. Wonderworld Comics owner, Dennis Barger, and Tournament Organizer/Scout Susan Whittaker were happy with the turnout of their best release yet, eighteen people having played in the previous release held in July.
Players struggled to build a valid structured deck from the packs they were given, many of the players having to splash into a second symbol, and even a third, just to make quota. But after every struggle there is relief, and players loosened up, joked around, battled hard, and had a great time. When everything was said and done, a winner was named, and all bowed down (or gave pats on the back) to the greatness of Andrew Olexa. But the UFS weekend was far from over!
The next day there was a two-in-one Great Lakes Championship and Foundations of Power tournament. Players came in early to perfect their decks and register them, while managing a few friendly games before the tournament officially started. For Wonderworld’s first ever major UFS event, a record-breaking forty-five people entered, ranging widely in between experts of the game to the recently introduced.
Players battled hard for four rounds, then waited patiently with crossed fingers to see if they made it into the top 16 or not. Thankfully, all participants had very diverse character cards, resulting in only two people unfortunately being left out of the finals due to the diversity rule.
Crowds gathered around those left over, and slowly silence fell as, one by one, the top players dropped like flies until only two remained, and the final showdown in between Tanner Lang and Andrew Olexa was in effect. The battle in between the Vega and Start characters was intense and nerve-wracking, for players and spectators alike, until Andrew Olexa and his Vega Deck emerged victorious in a very close battle.
Mr. Olexa was crowned (really, we gave him a crown) Great Lakes Champion, and given prizes worthy of his efforts. Such prizes included three additional full sets of the Foundations of Power, a sealed boxes of the new sets, a full set of SNK starters, a Battle Pack, and store credit in the amount of $112.50. The others who were included in the top four: Keith Disbro, Brandon Bastianelli, and Tanner Lang also received a sealed box of one of the new boosters of choice, while Mr. Lang also received store credit in the amount of $57.
Everybody went home ecstatic, be it from being crowned champion, winning quite a few games, or generally having a blast. It was quite the weekend to remember, for UFS players in the Great Lakes Region. Everyone is already trying to figure out how to win the crown for next year.
